Types of Residence Permits in Georgia:

The following are the primary types of Georgian residence permits:

Work Residence Permit

This type of residence permit is issued to foreigners who intend to work or conduct entrepreneurial activities in Georgia.

  • Requirement: The applicant must demonstrate a monthly income (salary or business income) of at least GEL 1,300 derived from their work or business activities within Georgia.

  • Company Requirement: Additionally, the employer’s or the applicant’s registered company’s annual turnover must be at least GEL 50,000 for each foreigner applying for the work residence permit. (This condition does not apply to educational or medical institutions.)

Permanent Residence Permit

This permanent residence permit (often called an Investment Residence Permit for life) is typically issued to the spouse, underage child, or parent of an underage Georgian citizen.
Alternatively, a foreigner who has continuously lived in Georgia with a temporary residence permit for the preceding 10 years can apply for permanent residency. Navigating the specifics often requires understanding nuances of immigration law.

Study Residence Permit

This permit is issued to foreigners admitted to study at an authorized educational institution in Georgia. Securing this study residence permit requires official enrollment confirmation.

Residence Permit for Family Reunification

This permit is available to family members (spouse, minor child, dependent parent) of a foreigner who already holds a valid residence permit in Georgia.

Short-Term Residence Permit (Based on Real Estate)

This short-term residence permit is issued to foreigners who own real estate in Georgia, according to procedures established by Georgian law.

  • Requirement: The market value of the immovable property must exceed the equivalent of 100,000 USD in Georgian Lari. This permit can also cover the foreigner’s spouse and children.

Investment Residence Permit

This type of residence permit is issued to a foreigner—and their qualifying family members—who has either:

  • Made an investment of at least 300,000 USD (or its equivalent in Georgian Lari) following the regulations of the Law of Georgia on Promotion and Guarantees of Investment Activity, OR

  • Owns immovable property (excluding agricultural land) within Georgia with a market value exceeding 300,000 USD (equivalent in GEL). Note: Since August 2024, the real estate pathway grants this 5-year permit, not the permanent one directly.
